Russia is a wonderful place to experience.
If you are planning on visiting Russia soon - it will be a treat with its rich history, fascinating language and colorful culture. That all sounds wonderful but we recommend that you take some time and learn what odd things may be awaiting you. Some things on this list may sound strange since they are new to you but believe us - you will be happy you learned about them ahead of time.
1. You are not allowed to wear your shoes inside the house.
The hostess will provide you with a pair of slippers. Don’t forget that you need to leave the slippers there before you go, it’s not yours - the household just let you borrow it.
2. You'll find yourself trying to find the light switch inside the bathroom.
In the majority of Russian households, you can find them not inside but outside of the room. This may save you embarrassment in some situations.
3. No whistling indoors!
In Russia, whistling indoors means that either the house will catch fire soon or people will lose their money.
4. Thinking of renting an apartment?
Take out your keys and see if there’s a little magnet attached to it. It is the key to your apartment building. At least in the big cities, most Russians live in apartment buildings so if you need any assistance then ask for help from the locals.
5. Going on a small vacation
Do not think you can just kiss your family and take off. According to a Russian tradition, you and your loved ones need to gather in a room and enjoy a quiet moment together. Then your loved ones are able to say goodbyes - it must be done inside the flat. This tradition is ancient and is still followed currently.
Do as the Russians Do
Sounds like an unusual piece of advice but your time in Russia will be better like this. We can’t really say that Russians’ lives circle around these superstitions but they do feel rather strongly about them and besides, what’s a vacation or a stay in Russia if you don’t embrace the culture and tradition regardless of how strange it is? It is easier - when in any foreign country - do what the locals do.
